The 2019 Ch\u00e2teau Coutet and Ch\u00e2teau Pichon Baron were among the top-scoring wines for Jancis Robinson MW and Julia Harding MW at the recent Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux tasting in London.<\/p>\n
The pair split the tasting duties. Robinson tasted wines from the Right Bank, Margaux, St-Julien and Sauternes, while Harding tasted the rest of the Left Bank.<\/p>\n
Harding commented that: \u2018From this relatively small selection, I\u2019d say it\u2019s a vintage that needs time for those tannins to relax and one that offers decent value for those who are willing to wait.\u2019<\/p>\n
Robinson meanwhile approved of the \u2018trend away from exaggerated, pastiche St-\u00c9milions towards freshness\u2019, and that the tasting had, \u2018demonstrated the class, ripeness of fruit and tannin, and potential longevity of the 2019s\u2019.<\/p>\n

Sauternes takes the highest scores<\/strong><\/p>\n
The highest scores of the tasting were awarded to the sweet wines. Three Sauternes, ch\u00e2teaux Coutet, Lafaurie-Peyraguey and Suduiraut, were rated 18-points by Robinson.<\/p>\n
She commented that 2019 is \u2018really an excellent vintage for sweet white Bordeaux\u2019 and called them \u2018trophy wines\u2026 at non-trophy prices\u2019.<\/p>\n
All four of the top sweet wines are far cheaper than the reds. However, the three 18-point Sauternes have declined in price since release. Coutet has fallen the furthest, down 22.3%.<\/p>\n
