The Wine Advocate – Bordeaux: Sauternes 2022
20 January 2025
Château Coutet 2022: 94+/100 One of the wines of the vintage, the 2022 Coutet oê,s with notes of apricots, spices and exotic fruits, setting the stage for a medium to full-bodied, round and supple palate enhanced by brightness and tension that culminates in a spicy, minty finish. Its balanced structure and lively acidity contribute to […]

Bernard Burtschy
The Institut of Master of Wine – Annual Bordeaux Tasting: 2020 vintage report
Château COUTET 2020: Alcohol content: 13.5%, Grape variety: 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% MuscadelleAn impressive wine. Fresh orange zest greets the nose and on the palate a delicious compôte of soft stone fruits and citrus. Well weighted, fresh tasting and with considerable charm.
Vinous – Château Coutet 1989
8 July 2024
Château Coutet 1989: 93/100 The 1989 Coutet actually surpasses the bottle taste at the château three years earlier. The nose has orange Blossom, mandarin and less honeysuckle; it displays a littl more saffron here. The palate is beautifully balanced with a keen line of acidity, marmalade and quince, perhaps more viscous than previous bottles, wit […]
The Wine Doctor – Château Coutet 1989
2 July 2024
Château Coutet 1989: 97/100 The cork slipped from the neck of the 1989 Château Coutet without difficulty, and the wine released is rich and evidently mature (or maturing, at least), with shimmering red tinges to the deep golden hue. Despite the story of the harvest, which brought in botrytised grapes in dribs and drabs, […]
Divo – Terroir Bordeaux Primeur 2023
19 June 2024
Decanter – If Bordeaux got out of its own way, more people might see what they’re missing

In my glass this month: From time to time, I’ll open a white wine that’s past its best: flat, thin, lifeless. It’s always disappointing. Not so with the Opalie, Bordeaux 2020 (£30-£34 Honest Grapes, Ideal Wine Co, IG Wines, Starling Wines), a dry white Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend from Barsac’s Château Coutet, I was actually too […]
Château Coutet 2023: 96-97/100Aged for 18 months in barrel, and the child of four separate tris (the key, third outing taking place on and after October 2), this is a triumphant Coutet, every bit as good as the 2014, according to cellar master Laurier Giradot. The juxtaposition of high acidity (tartaric acid is only degraded […]

Falstaff – En Primeurs 2024

Best Dessert: Château CoutetIn 1787, former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, then ambassador to France, celebrated Château Coutet as the best Sauternes. Even centuries later, Château Coutet still creates some of the best dessert wines out there, including this Sauternes Blend. This style of wine is known for its thick texture and honey-sweet flavor, and this […]
Decanter – Best Sauternes & Barsac 2023 wines tasted en primeur
2023 Château Coutet: 97/100Superb Barsac energy and keen spice, almost Cayenne pepper with pronounced ginger, clove and both dry and fresh fig. Tasted twice with the same beguiling results, this wonderful wine exudes balance that reflects both opulence and verve (165 grams per litre of residual sugar, 3.66pH). The acidity makes the wines vivacious and […]
